What Is AEO for a Software Company?
AEO for software — also called GEO, or generative engine optimization — is the practice of structuring your product content, documentation, comparison pages, and third-party review presence so that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Bing Copilot, and Claude can accurately describe your product and recommend it by name when a buyer asks which tool to use.
SaaS buying has always been research-heavy, and the research now happens inside an answer engine. Forrester's 2026 buyer data found that 94% of business buyers report using AI in their buying process — up from 89% a year earlier — and that twice as many buyers now name generative AI or conversational search as a more meaningful information source than vendor websites, product experts, or sales reps.
That changes what a "ranking" is worth. When a buyer types "best help desk software for a 20-person team" into ChatGPT, there is no page one to win. There is a shortlist of five or six product names inside a paragraph, assembled from sources the model considers trustworthy. If your product isn't in that paragraph, you are not in the deal — and you will never see the impression in Google Search Console.
AEO for software is different from local AEO because the citation sources are different. For a B2B software query, answer engines lean heavily on review platforms, documentation, changelogs, comparison and alternatives pages, and community discussion — not just your marketing site. G2's analysis of roughly 35,000 ChatGPT citation records found review platforms make up 13.2% of unique cited domains at the evaluation stage versus 7.4% at discovery — about 1.8x more citation share exactly where purchase decisions get made.
The traffic that does arrive from AI search behaves differently, and better. Ahrefs published its own numbers: AI-search visitors were 0.5% of total traffic over a 30-day window but produced 12.1% of signups — roughly 23x the conversion rate of traditional organic visitors. Fewer sessions, deeper intent. That is the channel we optimize for.

The Market Shift
Why SaaS Marketing Teams Are Losing Top-of-Funnel Traffic
The organic traffic decline most SaaS teams saw over the last two years is not a content problem or a Google penalty. It is the answer engine absorbing the informational query — the exact query type most SaaS blogs were built to win.
Pew Research ran a behavioral study rather than a survey, tracking 68,879 real Google searches from 900 U.S. adults. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional organic result 8% of the time, versus 15% when no summary appeared — and they very rarely clicked the sources cited inside the summary. Roughly half your click-through disappears the moment an AI Overview renders.
AI Overview coverage is also volatile in a way that makes planning hard. Semrush's tracking of 10 million-plus keywords found AI Overviews on 6.49% of keywords in January 2025, peaking near 24.6% in July, and settling at 15.69% in November 2025. More importantly, the mix shifted: informational queries fell from 91.3% to 57.1% of AI Overview triggers as commercial and navigational queries — the money queries — grew into the format.
Meanwhile the AI channel itself is now large enough to matter on its own. Similarweb data reported by TechCrunch put AI platform referrals at more than 1.1 billion visits in June 2025, up 357% year over year, with ChatGPT responsible for over 80% of AI referrals to the top 1,000 domains. That is still small next to Google's 191 billion, but it is the fastest-growing acquisition channel most SaaS companies have no strategy for.
The honest framing: AI referrals are not yet replacing lost organic volume. Similarweb data reported by Digiday showed organic referrals to 1,000 tracked domains falling from 12 billion to 11.2 billion visits year over year while AI referrals climbed. You are not going to win back the volume. You win back the qualified subset — the buyer who asked a question with purchase intent and got handed a shortlist.

- "What do real users say about [product]?" — review velocity and recency on G2 and Capterra, plus customer stories with named companies and specific outcomes.
- "How long does implementation take?" — onboarding timelines, migration guides, and support SLAs stated as facts rather than adjectives.
- "Which [category] tools work with [platform]?" — platform-specific landing pages and marketplace listings that engines can associate with your entity.
- "Is [product] worth it / any good?" — sentiment queries answered from third-party sources. This is where review platforms and community threads do the talking for you.

The citation sources are completely different. Local AEO leans on Google Business Profile, LocalBusiness schema, directories, and geographic entity signals. Software AEO leans on review platforms, documentation, comparison content, pricing transparency, and community discussion — and the queries are national or global rather than city-scoped.
Practically, that means a SaaS engagement puts far more weight on your third-party footprint. G2's citation analysis found the G2 ecosystem alone accounts for about 84% of review-platform citation share in ChatGPT answers for software queries, so an incomplete Capterra profile can cost you more than a page of missing schema.
No one can guarantee that, and any agency that promises specific AI placements is selling you something they can't deliver. Answer engines are non-deterministic: the same question phrased two ways can return different products, and the retrieval and training methods change constantly.

Usually, yes — and it's the single most common blocker we find in SaaS engagements. If a crawler receives an empty HTML shell and the content only appears after JavaScript executes, many AI crawlers never see your copy at all. Google may render it eventually; GPTBot and PerplexityBot are far less forgiving.
The fix is server-rendered or prerendered HTML for every indexable route, each with its own title, canonical, meta description, and schema. We've done exactly this migration — see Get Off Lovable — and it typically produces the fastest measurable AEO improvement of anything on the list.
For AEO purposes, yes — or at least publish honest ranges with what drives them. "How much does [product] cost?" is one of the highest-intent queries in software, and if your pricing page says only "contact sales," the engine answers from third-party guesses, outdated review-site data, or a competitor's comparison page. You lose control of your own number.
If sales-led pricing is non-negotiable, publish a starting price, the pricing model (per seat, per usage, tiered), what's included at each tier, and what typically moves the number. That gives engines something accurate to quote and still routes the buyer to your sales team.
They get cited when they're genuinely useful and skipped when they're not. Answer engines reward comparisons that include real feature and pricing detail, clear statements about which product suits which situation, and honest acknowledgment of where the competitor wins. They tend to skip pages where every row conveniently favors the publisher.
That means the strongest comparison pages are the ones your sales team is slightly uncomfortable with. We write them that way on purpose — and add FAQPage schema so the question-and-answer pairs are directly extractable.

ChatGPT and Perplexity citations usually take 2–4 months as their crawlers re-index.
Review-platform work is the slowest lever because it depends on real customer review velocity, but it's often the highest-impact one for bottom-of-funnel software queries. Plan on a 90-day horizon for the first clear movement and six months for a meaningful shift in citation share.
